I want to donate but to whom? Confirming a 501 (c)(3)….
Over the past several years, we have donated to natural disasters and supporting organizations, animal rescue groups around the world. Americans have a big heart to help those in need, I am amazed at the dollars received and reported in the news.
The information concerning NON-Profits needs to be taken in small bits, so several posting will come your way, including how to start and register, what a non-profit should have on their website including Facebook, handling employees and lobbing, and how to stay exempt.
Here is the first of the series to help consumers share their dollars wisely.
Most recently in the news and on Facebook reports of FAKE charities announcing to provide support for Patrick. Patrick was starved and placed in a plastic bag, thrown down the garage shoot only to be discovered by a good Samaritan.. and now Patrick is making an amazing recovery and has moved the world. Yet in all the good will to financial help support the cost of recovery, there is exploitation of animals lovers. Not knowing those donation have gone to fake non-profits, the organization is not registered with their respective states nor with the IRS.
So how do you check to make sure your hard-earned money is going to the registered 501 (c) (3) of your choice?
IRS has a search for Charities: http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=96136,00.html
“Publication 78, Cumulative List of Organizations described in Section 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, is a list of organizations eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions. This online version is offered to help you conduct a more efficient search of these organizations.”
Here is a consumer’s opportunity to exercise, you may verify an organization’s tax-exempt status and eligibility to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions by asking to see an organization’s IRS letter recognizing it as tax-exempt. You may also confirm an organization’s status by calling the IRS (toll-free) at 1-877-829-5500.
In the spirit of ‘ Paying Forward’ the delight of sharing and supporting an animal rescue fundraiser and the opportunity to blog on their behalf is the mission Darby’s Story and More. Through the pages of the book inspires pet adoption.
This past year several books have been donated, and sometimes I have to admit, I did not check with the State Secretary or the IRS to see if the non-for profit status was active or revoked. So here is my homework and I hope this helps you with your quest to help nonprofit animal rescues or any organization.
In the past I have announced three animal recue groups received Darby’s Story Book.
Top Paws Rescue, registered in Florida, received a Darby’s Story Book for their Fundraiser Top Paw Rescue Florida filing status To find more nonprofit animal organizations here the search link http://sunbiz.org/search.html
Angel Among Us, registered in Georgia, was other nonprofit receiving Darby’s Story http://corp.sos.state.ga.us/corp/soskb/Corp.asp?1551200
Opin, a Connecticut non-profit organization, now the state does not require filing with the Secretary so the information is on the IRS website here is the link OPIN Inc IRS status . This took the most time to discover, the search required finding the key words, E – number permit, go figure….Connecticut no longer issues exemption permits but accepts for proof of exemption a copy of the Federal Determination Letter or a Connecticut Exemption Permit (E-Number Permit) issued prior to 1995. http://www.ct.gov/drs/cwp/view.asp?a=1541&q=270818
Each State has a website, and the Secratary post the information to file a non-profit and the current status, will take some time to get use to your States website, however it all worth it.
