Pingree is launching a new program for middle school students! Who Knows? offers a selection of enrichment courses for kids in grades 7 and 8 taught by Pingree faculty. Classes will meet for four Friday sessions — April 13, 27 and May 4, 11 — from 4-5:30 p.m. This spring’s course selection includes Forensic Science, Creative Writing, and The Art of Bookmaking. Our Robotics class is now full, but you may sign up for the wait list at no charge and we will contact you should a spot become available. Classes are just $35 and you can register by clicking here.
Introduction to Basics of Forensic Science

Do you consider yourself a science person? Do you enjoy conducting experiments in the lab? Do you employ painstaking precision when taking and recording scientific measurements? Are you obsessed with watching crime scene investigation shows such as Bones or CSI? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then join Ms. Mack and a small group of your peers at the Pingree school as we try to crack the case! We will learn about the techniques employed by forensic scientists such as fingerprint identification, footprint and tool mark analysis, and simulated blood sample analysis!

Instructor: Amanda Mack, a graduate of the University of Rochester, joined the Pingree School in the fall of 2011. She teaches chemistry and biology, and is an assistant coach of the junior varsity girls volleyball team. Ms. Mack received her Bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Rochester, and her Master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Ms. Mack lives in North Reading, Massachusetts.

Creative Writing Workshop

If you write, want to write, need to write, love to write, or would like to write creatively, this workshop is for you. During this course, we will write pieces of short fiction and poetry inspired by select prompts, various readings, nature, our own stories, and the stories that surround us. We will hone our unique voices through free writes, class discussions, sharing of drafts, and group critiques. Our goal is to become an encouraging community of writers willing to experiment, craft, and revise, and, like Truman Capote, find pleasure in the “inner music [our] words make.”  In the end, we will celebrate our accomplishments by publishing our own online literary journal.

Instructor: Michelle Ramadan, a graduate of Brown University, joined the English faculty at Pingree in 2010. She currently lives in Salem, MA. In addition to speaking five languages, she dabbles in poetry, instructs Tae Kwon Do, makes pottery, and studies Middle Eastern literature.

The Art of Bookmaking

Make a book or two! Come express your creativity! We will use both printmaking and photography to make covers and pages for two book projects. Then we will bind the pages and covers into a sketchbook and a visual book.

Instructor: Deborah VanderMolen, a graduate of Mass College of Art, has been teaching art at Pingree for more than 20 years. She is a photographer and printmaker whose work is in museums and private collections both nationally and internationally. Deborah loves teaching the art of bookmaking and living on her horse farm in New Hampshire.
