She’s a Kayaking Dog

July 23, 2012 at 9:06 am 17 comments

This past weekend the family, including the family dog, Oddie enjoyed our day away from the farm. The weather too hot to be building more fence or painting another barn. We decided days prior to go kayaking. While the guys placed and tied down the kayaks on the truck, a wonderful picnic was being prepared; cubed watermelon and cantelope, an assortment of fresh raw veggies with healthy baked chicken and on the side chilled potato salad. We check our life jackets and the paddles, food and beverages, dog treats and leash the family was were ready to go.

The water was chilly on this little lake, the sun was already warming up, we placed the kayaks on the clear clean water, placed the cooler of beverages with dog treats and headed out.

Oddie enjoyed the ducks on the water, she watched intently, and we watched her with delight. An Osprey flew over head, seeking a fresh water trout for a snack, Oddie gazed up staring at the large bird of prey. She knew running after the bird was not an option in the kayak. At the farm she would bussy herself with digging for field mice, and chasing after the birds flying by. Oddie is our little misplaced dachshund mix. She was a classic case of a coworker chatting up free puppies. All needing a good home, cause the owner of the mother did not spay her dog.

The family paddled along the shore line watching and listening to the forest birds, heading down the lake to the narrows to the far end. We headed back to the dock  for lunch and to swim in the cool water.  After enjoying the farm fresh fruit and veggies, for a special treat to finish the day. We headed over to the creek, the outlet of the lake to pick wild black berries. We enjoyed from our Kayak’s picking wild black berries. Sunday morning breakfast was going to be delicious, pancakes with real maple syrup : )

In celebration of Blogger’s United for Dog Rescue, please remember that rescues make great pets. Oddie’s history and how she came to be a member of this family happens. Oddie is an incredible companion, although her start in life was an uncertain, we can say, “she is certainly family”

Wonderful story, Martha. I loved reading about Oddie gazing up at the bird that she couldn’t chase. This was a nice break from work: I could hear the water lapping against the boat, the birds flying by. I have picked raspberries, but never blackberries, and definitely never from a boat! What a real treat that must have been. You brought back good memories though, from my raspberry picking days. 🙂

Great story, Martha. When we had our two dogs (dalmation and labrador), the kids were young and what a hoot when we took them for a boat ride and romp on Shell Island! Believe me, they always put on a show, espescially the lab. Have a great day:>)

I love kayaking with dogs. I swear they love the different smells coming off the water.

This definitely made me long for time by the lake! It’s true about rescue pets… their past may always remain a mystery, but at least we can make their present and their future as great as can be and filled with love. I’m happy to see that Oddie has a great family!
